Gallop Towards Your Goals: Embracing Uncertainty While Moving Forward

I captured this image while heading down highway 2 between Edmonton and Red Deer. (I wasn't driving) At a high point on the west bank, this horse was just galloping along, outside the fence. I hoped it would stay here and not come down close to the road. It was a beautiful little moment.

Embracing the Unknown: The Feeling of Uncertainty

There's a weight to being in between. A feeling of temporary. Ambiguity. There's pressure to define the now, and I don't have the clear answers. What's real and current is learning how to be comfortable with discomfort and accepting that the timeline or method is, well, still to be determined. Shouldn't this time and phase feel more freeing?

Today this image speaks to me about a stage in life when I feel like I'm neither inside the fence or outside it. I'm somewhere in between. And it made me reflect on another time in my life when it felt like ....I was stalled.

The Importance of Forward Motion

As I contemplate this topic, I remember how badly I wanted something very personal to happen in my life. And it wasn't happening. All my efforts in this failed, however valiantly I tried. But I didn't give up. In fact, I had to try different things in order to keep moving ahead. If I hadn't wanted it bad enough, I would have likely stopped trying. I wonder now, is that part of the problem some days with other challenges? Do I actually want it bad enough? Because that powerful desire was a catalyst in itself. Unrelenting, focused and driven. For me, in this time it wasn't about slow, methodical progress. I had to get outside the fence and try something different to get the result I wanted.

Cultivating Persistence When the Goal Feels Distant

I was lucky, in that I could easily visualize my goal. At the time I was even prepared to sacrifice greatly to achieve my goal. I'm not so sure I would be so brave and determined today. Reframing success and progress: Redefining what achievement looks like during uncertain times.

  • The power of daily habits: Creating routines that keep the momentum alive regardless of outcomes.

  • Finding motivation in the process, not just the result: Learning to enjoy the ride like the horse running freely.

  • Recognizing progress in unexpected ways: Celebrating small wins and shifts in perspective.

Lessons Learned from Running Outside the Fence

  • Trusting the journey: Accepting that clarity often emerges through the ongoing effort.

  • Patience can serve as a companion to persistence: Balancing eagerness with acceptance of timing.

  • Resilience can emerge in the face of uncertainty: Building emotional strength by staying in motion.

  • Embracing imperfection and unpredictability: Allowing life’s messiness to shape growth.

What I Achieved During this Pivotal Time

  • Personal growth beyond measurable goals: Gaining confidence and self-trust through motion alone.

  • Inspiration to keep moving: Encouragement for anyone feeling stuck by uncertainty.

  • A mindset shift from waiting to acting: Motivation to pursue without waiting for perfect clarity.

  • Embracing freedom while seeking direction: Balancing independence with openness to learning.
